Annita Peeler is the Executive Director at Hickory Woods Senior Living in Murray, KY. Annita has served as the Executive Director of Hickory Woods Senior Living Community since its opening in 1998. Annita started her career as a medical transcriptionist at Murray Calloway County Hospital. During that time, she received her Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Five years later, Annita went to work as the office manager and secretary for two busy internists in Murray, Dr. Russell Howard and Dr. John R. Quertermous. She was selected as “Secretary of the Year” by the Murray Chapter of Professional Secretaries International along with her boss, Dr. Howard, who was chosen “Boss of the Year.”
Annita’s next career move was at Marshall County Hospital where she started as the Medical Record Director but was later promoted to include, not just Medical Records, but the Business Office and Registration Director. She recalls the first day of her promotion when her boss fired all of the business office staff except two with accounts receivable at over 100 days! The “clean up” of the business office was an “eye opener,” but before the year was up, they had dropped days in accounts receivable to 38. Because of the success of the business office clean-up, Lourdes Hospital hired Annita to their staff where she managed 80 employees in their Medical Records, Business Office, and Registration Departments. During this time, Annita received her Certification in Patient Accounts Management.
Annita felt despite the success in her career, it just seemed like “a job.” Hickory Woods Retirement Center was being built in Murray and Annita interviewed for the Executive Director position. During this time she was living in Paducah but when she received the phone call saying she had the position, her husband was visiting the former owners of their home and sold their home back to them the same morning Annita got the job. Annita said, “That’s when you know the Lord is in.” Annita says so much of her time over the years has been educating the community on what assisted living is – NOT A NURSING HOME. After 18 years, Annita says she still is educating but now includes educating the community on the benefits of their new memory care unit for residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“I never have a day that I don’t KNOW this is where the Lord wants me, and I strive to give Him and Hickory Woods the best I have every day.”– Anita Peeler
Annita has been married to the love of her life, Charlie for 36 years who supports her and Hickory Woods 100%.
